Intermediate
Andean Shamanism

Spring/Summer 2009

This 10 day Journey will take us high into the Andes and to Machu Picchu to work with a Wachuma Shaman. We will explore the beautiful city of Cusco and travel through and explore the Sacred Valley in our own private van., then on to Machu Picchu.  After Machu Picchu, we will fly to Puno to experience ceremonies on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest natural lake in the world. This is an ideal Journey for a physically and emotionally fit person who has had experience with Shamanic healing and wants to go to a new and deeper level.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Cusco and get settled in hotel.  Cusco is at an altitude of 11,300 feet, so taking the first day or two slowly is essential for most people.
  • Day 2 - Tour sites in Cusco, both from the colonial period and from the Incan period.
  • Day 3 - Continue to explore Cusco.  Cusco is also an amazing center for art and crafts, so we'll do some shopping today as well.
  • Day 4 - We'll leave early in the morning for the Sacred Valley.  First we'll stop at a center for traditional clothing.  Here we will be able to interact with llamas and alpacas, see how their wool is dyed, spun, and woven, and have the opportunity to buy clothing and tapestries of the highest quality. First we'll see the market at Pisac and hike the ruins high above the city.   Then we'll visit the city and ruins at Ollyantaytambo. We'll spend the night in the city of Ollyantaytambo, sharing an authentic Andean meal, or perhaps pizza!
  • Day 5 - We'll catch the first train to Aguas Callientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.  We'll quickly get settled in our hotel, meet the Shaman who will be our guide, and take the bus up the hill to Machu Picchu.  We'll spend the day exploring the ruins and sitting in meditation and ceremony. We'll wait till sunset and then catch one of the last busses down the hill.  Then we'll share dinner.
  • Day 6 - The hardy, fit and bold will have the opportunity to climb Apu Machu Picchu, the tall mountain from which the ruins received their name.  We'll spend several hours on top of the mountain in meditation and ceremony.  Here we'll have a chance to see an offrenda (offering), containing all of our prayers beautifully created by the shaman.  After we climb down the mountain, we'll continue to explore the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu until closing, if time and energy allows.
  • Day 7 - We will go to another sacred site near Machu Picchu for another wachuma ceremony.
  • Day 8 - Return to Cusco and Lima for Flights home or on to Lake Titicaca
